And What Alice Found There
The final destination on our Southern Hemisphere adventure was the beautiful Fiji. This was a destination I have dreamed of visiting for so long! It’s one of those fantasy places that seems so far-off, exotic and a true paradise with turquoise blue oceans, white sandy beaches, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and cocktails to sip while the sun goes down. A lot of the time you imagine a holiday destination to be as good as this, but in reality you find crowded and noisy beaches, dirty streets, expensive food and drink, and in fact it’s nothing special at all. This is where Fiji is different! It truly is as beautiful as I ever imagined and is a real gem of a place – somewhere I would happily return to time and time again! While stepping off the plane into a torrential downpour wasn’t quite how I’d pictured our arrival, we quickly settled in to see what this gorgeous place had to offer once the rain shower had stopped...
New Zealand is somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a long time and in a way it’s been a part of my life since before I was born as I have family members that live over there. After a lifetime of hearing all about this supposedly beautiful place from family & friends I thought it was about time I paid a visit myself so tying it in with our Australia trip seemed like the ideal opportunity. And what better way to see the place than yet another road trip!
In 2017, Greg and I set off to make one of our lifelong dreams come true; to road trip along the infamous Route 66 in America. It wasn’t our first road trip together, but it was the longest one we’d ever done and we had an absolute blast. It’s safe to say that when we returned home the travelling blues kicked in almost immediately, and in true Alice style I straight away started looking at where we could go next! Considering we’re both still young (debatable) and at the time we had no major commitments i.e. we lived at home and had no children or pets to worry about, we thought hey…why not do another crazy road trip! And while there’s tons of places closer to home that would have been amazing (one of our favourite road trips to date was on our doorstep in Scotland!) we don’t like to do things by halves so we settled on going to the opposite side of the world! Yes it would be expensive & our bank accounts may get totally wiped out, but this might be the only chance we ever get to do this trip before we start to think about mortgages and savings and all that adult stuff. So I decided to leave my job, booked us one way tickets to Australia and let the planning begin!
